Biography:
I am a native of Chicago and have been a New Mexico resident since 1984, having moved here from the Navajo reservation in Arizona, where I worked as a psychologist.
My artistic studies began when I was in high school, when I took drawing and painting classes at the Art Institute of Chicago.
I was raised in a household where both still and 8mm movie photography was always present, including a darkroom in the basement. My own use of photography as a medium started when I began to travel, and found that there was little time to capture my impressions in mysketchbook. Since then, I have traveled widely in the U.S., Canada, Europe, Asia, Australia, and Latin America, photographing everywhere. In Albuquerque I studied photography with Jim Ruffner of Photogenesis and Louise and Stewart Lewis. I have had my photographs published in books and national magazines. In addition to still photography, I have used a videocam for an oral history project, as well as to record jazz concerts presented by the New Mexico Jazz Workshop, for presentation on the community access cable TV program, "Jazz Scene."
Statement of Philosophy
My philosophy might be stated simply with a paraphrase of a popular slogan, "What I see is what you get." I am interested in colors, forms, light and shadow, natural and built architecture, and in capturing the aspects of peoples' lives and culture which show the similarities and differences between the peoples of the world. Some of my work might be considered photojournalism. My photos are taken with 35mm cameras, both SLR and rangefinder, and are not manipulated beyond ordinary cropping and color adjustment. At present, film processing and printing is done commercially, although I have experiemented with digital (computer) printing.
