Heads in Space (Abstraction)
oil on canvas, 54 x 78
Karel Appel
- 1958
Washington University in St. Louis
subject: abstract
descrizione: Heads in Space, thus, is the work of a mature artist, secure in his place as an internationally respected image-maker, full of exuberance and confidence. The work is a wonderful example of Appel's post-Cobra style, in which he de-emphasized his reliance on imagery drawn from children's art and, while retaining a predilection for the bright primary colors that marked his Cobra paintings, moved in the direction of greater abstraction. Canvases from this period are in some ways similar to the work of American Abstract Expressionists. Yet, unlike many of his American counterparts, Appel seldom completely rejected figurative elements.
